Critics' Verdict

Ranbir Kapoor's performance powers Sanju, with critics praising its humour, emotion and engaging storytelling. Several reviewers, however, felt the film was too sympathetic towards Sanjay Dutt and avoided some of the harder truths of his life. The film also became a major box office blockbuster.

Ranbir Kapoor is excellent, but the film is too sympathetic towards Sanjay Dutt and avoids digging deeply into his life. It is watchable but ultimately an average biopic.
