'Aamir Khan is a very secure actor'

You might have started noticing actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui only recently with two stellar performances — in Kahaani, he plays the senior cop Khan; and in Gangs Of Wasseypur (GOW) 1, he excels as Sohail, one of Sardar Khan’s (Manoj Bajpai) sons. Now Nawaz will be seen in a big role in Part 2 of director Anurag Kashyap’s GOW.

The actor, who made his debut over a decade ago in the small role of a criminal in the Aamir Khan-starrer Sarfarosh (1999), is now steadily moving towards the spotlight. In director Reema Kagti’s upcoming Talaash, he will play the second lead, after Aamir Khan. “Aamir recommended my name for Talaash,” Nawaz says.

Aamir is playing a cop in the film that also stars Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor. However, Nawaz refuses to divulge any details about his character. “I can’t speak about it yet. All I can say is that the film is a suspense thriller. The role is interesting.”

The actor also played a crucial role in Aamir Khan Production’s Peepli [Live] (2010), which was directed by Anusha Rizvi. All praise for Aamir, he says, “He’s a very secure actor. He works like a co-actor, not like a superstar. He understand cinema. Maybe that’s why he could contribute to Indian cinema with films like Lagaan (2001) and Peepli [Live].”

Nawaz is excited about the change in the film industry and in people’s tastes, which he believes has brought appreciation for his work. He says, “It came late, but thankfully, it came. People have started recognising me. There are a lot of great actors, who have been striving for years, but still remain unnoticed. This is a great time for Indian cinema. There are new directors with fresh ideas and they don’t come with a hangover. Filmmakers have started thinking differently.”
