Won't share the screen with Aamir Khan ever, says Kiran Rao
By Hindustan Times
Kiran Rao, who will walk the ramp for Vikram Phadnis on behalf of the NGO Swades Foundation, insists she’ll never share screen space with actor-husband Aamir Khan. She adds that direction is hard enough for her to stay away from acting. She also talks about what could be her second directorial project.
You are to walk the ramp at fashion week. What inspired the decision?
The call came from Zarina Mehta (Ronnie Screwvala’s partner at Swades Foundation). I’ve seen them setting this up for more than a year now. I’ve been hearing stories of life in our (Indian) villages, and I really admire the work they are doing in that sector. I thought their efforts had to be supported. It’s a small gesture on my part.
Have you thought of associating with an NGO directly? What kind of cause would you support?
I’ve been thinking about the kind of cause I connect to the most. And I realised it’s mostly women’s issues. So far, I’ve never thought I should associate myself with a NGO or group. Sometime I feel that I should do something unique of my own. I haven’t actually arrived at what it is that I exactly want to do.
You are walking the ramp alongside actors who are used to doing this. Are you nervous?
Not really. I plan to be myself, because I’m not a glamourous, model-type of person. The interesting thing is, they (organisers) are going to partner us with one of the achievers from the NGO. I’m looking forward to meeting those people. That’s going to be fun.
Are you working on a second movie, to direct?
I’m trying to get back to writing and have started something, but I don’t know if this is what I want to make. It’s very different from what I thought my next film would be.
Dhobi Ghat (2010) was critically acclaimed. Will your next one be along the same lines?
Nothing will be quite the same as another film, but I suppose a certain kind of stories interest me and that will always reflect in my films.
Are you tempted to act in any of your future films? Alongside Aamir (Khan) maybe?
Directing is hard enough. I’m not that capable, to direct and act simultaneously. I don’t think you will get to see me share screen space with him in any movie.
