Vishesh Films: Sequels over stars!

By HT

Mumbai, April 13 -- Since the start of 2011, Vishesh Films, a banner that is owned by brothers Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt, has only invested in sequels - apart from Blood Money (2012). The production house has gone on to make franchises out of their hit films and have come out with movies like Murder 2 (2011), Jism 2 (2012), Raaz 3D (2012) and Murder 3.

The latest addition to this list, is their much anticipated Aashiqui 2. What's interesting, however, is that this sudden explosion of sequels, is not a co-incidence but a preplanned strategy of the Bhatt brothers. "A sequel, as soon as it is announced, gets its audience because people have already liked the original. In today's time, it is difficult to market a new film without a big star cast, but franchises give us the security. It is, at anytime, a better business proposition than banking in on big stars in Bollywood," says Mahesh Bhatt.

The production house, apparently, is also very particular about the kind of scripts they want make into a sequel. "We make a sequel only if we feel that the script falls into the genre of any of our previous hits, and not just for the sake of it," says Mukesh Bhatt.

The director-duo further insists that with their latest release they also want the young audience to visit days gone by. "Aashiqui 2 is the kind of romantic film, that would have been made in the '90s. It is a family entertainer, unlike our usually erotic films. It will cater to all generations," says Mahesh.
