To cash in on the huge success of the Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha starrer, Rowdy Rathore, producers UTV Motion Pictures are in a hurry to release the star pair’s next movie, Joker. Now, instead of releasing Joker on September 14 as was originally planned, UTV will release it on August 31.
To achieve this change of dates, the production house has pushed back the release of its Ranbir Kapoor starrer, Barfi! “We want to come out with our Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha film as soon as possible, so we made this switch,” says Siddharth Roy Kapur, managing director, studios, Disney UTV. “It was possible to do this because we dropped the idea of converting Joker to the 3D format and so the film does not need much time in post-production.”
Barfi! on the other hand, requires a little more time for post-production than was originally conceived, so the Anurag Basu film will benefit from this change of release date. “Barfi! is a film in which the music and post-production is really important, so we really didn’t want to rush it,” says Kapur. “I think it’s a win-win situation for both films.”
Joker, an ambitious sci-fi film directed and co-produced by Shirish Kunder, has apparently gone over budget. But since the plan to release the movie in 3D has been dropped, Kapur feels that it will not lose any money. “Since we don’t need to go through the process of converting the film to 3D, there will be no monetary loss at all,” he says.
