Shabana Azmi is on a high. Yesterday afternoon, director-choreographer Prabhudheva agreed to walk the ramp on September 3 for her NGO, Mijwan Welfare Society. The fashion show, Mijwan Sonnets In Fabric 2012, will have 23 celebs — including Imran Khan, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra
and Sonakshi Sinha — walking the ramp. “Sonakshi called on her own to inform me that her out-of-town trip had been postponed by a day, so could she walk for the girl child,” says Shabana.
After cricketer Yuvraj Singh, she’s now got boxer Mary Kom onto the ramp: “She was shocked by the unexpected offer, but coming from a small village and humble beginnings, she’s a role model for our girls, who now believe their seemingly-impossible dreams are achievable.
She will be arriving on Monday and may wear a sharara with Mijwan embroidery,” says Shabana, admitting that she was thrilled to hear that Mary’s favourite film is Masoom (1983) and song — ‘Tujhse naraaz nahin..’. “This show is not just about beauty and glamour but substance and empowerment too.”
Three years ago, two days before the first of these fashion shows, Shabana went on stage with a new play, Broken Images. This time too, she has a show on Sunday. “I’m loony to take on this double pressure, but it’ll be the last show till November. My house is like a mad house, with 50 people doing 50 things. But it’s heart-warming to see my mother (Shaukat Kaifi) look at the pandemonium with joyful tears and say, ‘Kaifi hote to kitne khush hote’ (Kaifi would have been so happy to see this).”
