Mumbai, Sept. 14 -- Ramesh Sippy is returning to Bollywood after a gap of 16 years. The veteran filmmaker is best known for his cult hit, Sholay (1975), among other money-spinners like Seeta Aur Geeta (1972), Shaan (1980), Shakti (1982) and Saagar (1985). This time, he is set to helm a romantic film.
When contacted, Sippy confirms the news. "Yes, I am working on my next project. It's going to be a romantic film. I am very excited with the way the script is shaping up and am looking forward to starting the casting process," he says, adding that no particular actor has crossed his mind yet because he is till working on the script.
The director's last three films -Bhrashtachar (1989), Akayla (1991), and Zamaana Deewana (ZD, 1995) -failed to match up to his past successes. The new film will be his first romantic one since the Dimple Kapadia-starrer. Saagar. Currently, Sippy is still writing the film, yet untitled, and will begin casting only after he completes it. The shoot is expected to start next year, under his family's banner, RS Entertainment. Till date, it's been Sippy's son, Rohan, who has been making films for the company.
A source reveals that the film will be urban, and not a classic romance: "He is going to rope in young actors. No one from the older generation is likely to make the cut." The source adds, "Sippy is keen to pull off a casting coup. Even with Saagar, Dimple had made a much-hyped comeback. Since this project is very special to him, casting may be difficult." Interestingly, even as Sippy Sr chalks out plans to hit the silver screen again, one of his contemporaries Yash Chopra too, is starting a romantic film starring Shah Rukh Khan. Incidentally, SRK also starred in Sippy's last directorial outing, ZD. Both filmmakers are expected to release their directorial comebacks next year.
