India shone brightly as Asha Bhosle, Ravi Shankar, Jay Sean and Meera Syal were honoured at the award ceremony.

"Among the winners was the legendary Indian singer, Asha Bhosle," reports BBC. Reportedly Jay Sean and Asha Bhosle sang a duet at the ceremony also, much to everyone's delight.

Sitar player Ravi Shankar took home the prestigious Fellowship Award, with his daughter Anushka collecting the trophy for the 91-year old.

Jay Sean received the Outstanding achievement in music. Overjoyed he tweeted: "So had a great time last nite (sic) catching up with friends at the Asian Awards and won the "Outstanding achievement in music" award. Thnku!! (sic):)"

Late legend Freddie Mercury was posthumously honoured at The Asian Awards 2011 last night, receiving a special prize for his contribution to music.

Mercury's family and his Queen band mate Brian May were on hand at the ceremony to accept the Founders Award on Freddie's behalf - in what would have been his 65th birthday year.

Other winners at the ceremony - held at London's Grosvenor House - included R&B star Jay Sean, who picked up the trophy for Outstanding Contribution To Music.

Speaking of his win, the Down hit maker stated: "This is a big award title, it means a lot to me. I've only got to the beginning of what I want to achieve."
