TV stars get prominent roles in Bollywood

Ask any television star about their next goal and their prompt reply will be Bollywood. After doing the same role for years, the film industry seems like a greener pasture. But most popular faces from the small screen end up doing smaller parts.

With changing times, many television stars are getting their due in films as they have landed plum lead roles and not settled for supporting characters like many of their predecessors have. These stars have not only proved themselves on TV but also have a loyal fan following.

We take a look at the ones ready to take the plunge.

Barun Sobti
Barun Sobti became a heartthrob with his super hit show, Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon. His chemistry with co-star Sanaya Irani set the small screen on fire and his fans loved him so much that the show had to end when he quit. This 28-year-old model-turned-actor has now quit TV altogether to focus on films.

Big ticket: He will debut in the rom-com Main Aur Mr Riight. He also has a cricket-based film, 22 Yards, in his kitty.

Karan Kundra
Twenty-eight-year-old Karan Kundra soared to popularity when he played Arjun Punj in Balaji’s Kitani Mohabbat Hai Season 1 and 2. He has been busy doing Punjabi films and is currently seen on TV as the host of the juvenile crime show Gumrah — End Of Innocence.

Big ticket: A three-film deal with Vikram Bhatt, with the first one being Horror Story. Karan also stars in a psychological thriller called Rum Pum Posshh, made by Tanu Weds Manu (2011) producer Shailesh Singh, and co-starring Prateik.

Vishal Kanwal
An engineer by education, Vishal tried his luck in the reality show Roadies season four and became the winner of Spiltsvilla season one. Later, the 28-year-old did shows like Bhagyavidhaata, Rishton Se Badi...Pratha and Dwarkadheesh — Bhagwaan Shree Krishna.

Big ticket : He will make his Bollywood debut with an untitled horror film. It is part of producer Vikram Bhatt’s 1920 (2008) franchise.

Manish Paul
After acting in shows like Ghost Bana Dost, Radhaa Ki Betiyaan Kuch Kar Dikhayengi, Pyaar Mein Twist among others, 31-year-old Manish rose to popularity as the host in shows such as Dance India Dance Li’l Masters and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (Season 6) among others.

Big ticket: He will be seen as a computer geek in his debut film Oye Mickey, which is directed by Saurabh Varma. He also has signed the sequel to the 2010 comedy, Tere Bin Laden.

Switch Hits
Shah Rukh Khan made a mark on TV in the late ’80s with shows like Fauji, where he played Abhimanyu Rai. Lekh Tandon’s Dil Dariya and Aziz Mirza’s Circus were the other shows he appeared in. Today he’s a superstar and is fondly called King Khan.

Sushant Singh Rajput debuted in a Balaji show, Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil, and later became popular when he played Manav Deshmukh in Pavitra Rishta. He hit it big with his debut film Kai Po Che! and has Yash Raj Film’s Shuddh Desi Romance, Rajkumar Hirani’s P.K. and Ekta Kapoor’s next in the pipeline.

Ayushmann Khurrana won Roadies Season 2 and went on to become a popular VJ. His debut film Vicky Donor (2012) was a hit. He has Yash Raj Films’s untitled next in hand.

Rajeev Khandelwal’s role as Sujal Garewal in Kahiin To Hoga made him an instant hit. His performance in Aamir (2008) won him rave reviews and he followed it up with Shaitan (2011).

Prachi Desai's role as Bani in Kasamh Se brought her popularity. In 2008, she debuted opposite Farhan Akhtar in Rock On!! (2008).

Yami Gautam became a household name after her shows Chand Ke Paar Chalo, Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam among others. Her Bollywood debut with Vicky Donor was equally well received.

No Show
Amar Upadhyay tried his luck in films after quitting Post Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. However, he suffered multiple flop — Dahshat (2003) and Dhund — The Fog (2003).

Hussain Kuwajerwala debuted with the film Shree earlier this year. It was a dud at the box office.

Aamna Sharif made her film debut with Aloo Chaat (2009) and later did Aao Wish Karein (2009). But both films flopped and Aamna returned to TV.

Hot in Hollywood
Jennifer Aniston’s name is still synonymous with Rachel, her character in the super hit 10-season-long show, Friends.

George Clooney is still remembered for his role in the hit show ER.

Bruce Willis played an investigator in Moonlighting, in the late ’80s.

Will Smith was on TV for seven years in the ’90s in the show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
