Mumbai, June 20 -- A few months ago, we had reported in HT Cafe that filmmaker Karan Johar plans to make his last directorial, Student Of The Year (SOTY; 2012) into a franchise. As per the plan, every two years, a new version of the film will be released, which will only star fresh faces. And now, we've been informed about some more developments.
A well-placed trade source reveals, "All the directors at Dharma Productions (Karan's production house), who are known to make films in similar genres, have been asked to begin work (on the script). Mainly, Ayan Mukerji, Tarun Mansukhani, Siddharth Malhotra and Punit Malhotra have been asked to start working on a script for the second instalment of SOTY.
While the main plot will remain the same, a lot of other changes will be introduced in every new version of the movie."
The source goes on to add that in all likelihood, Karan won't direct any of the next SOTY films. The source says, "He will now only guide the directors and let them take it forward. The director whose script gets the green signal, will helm the next film. The process will continue like that for the remaining movies as well."
We had previously reported that the idea to make SOTY into a franchise came about because of the huge response that the first film received. The source says, "It was the highest grossing film, starring all newcomers. And people really liked the concept as it was a refreshing break from other movies."
