Mumbai, June 12 -- Raj Kumar Gupta's directorial debut, Aamir (2008), is being remade in Tamil. South production house Shoundaryan Pictures has bought the rights of the film from Disney UTV.

"I'm very happy to hear about it. The Tamil audience is very discerning, and I'm confident that this remake of Aamir will garner as much acclaim as the Hindi version. I wish the makers the very best from all of us," says Raj Kumar, who is currently wrapping up his next release, Ghanchakkar.

This is the second time that UTV has sold the rights to one of their films to a south studio. Neeraj Pandey's A Wednesday (2008) was the first. "We believe in the power of a great story with universal themes. It has the potential to grow and deliver many more opportunities to enthrall new sets of audiences each time we present it," says Siddharth Roy Kapur, managing director, studios, Disney UTV. He adds, "Aamir was our first release under the UTV Spotboy banner, and it started a successful association with Raj Kumar and Amit Trivedi."

The film will be directed by debutant Anand Krishna and south actor Vidharth will reprise the role of Rajeev Khandelwal, who played the lead in the original.
