A Kerala-born Kollywood actress and her live-in partner were arrested from a plush south Delhi farmhouse in a joint operation by the Chennai and the Delhi Police in a cheating case. Leena Maria Paul, 25, who has acted in a handful of movies such as Madras Café (under production) opposite
John Abraham and Red Chillies, was absconding in a cheating case registered in Chennai while her friend, one Balaji alias Sekar Reddy, recently cheated Canara Bank of Rs. 19 crore, said BS Jaiswal, DCP (south).
“On May 25, a team of the Chennai Police’s Central Crime Branch approached us seeking help in tracing the duo,” said DCP Jaiswal.
“Apart from being wanted in a case of cheating Canara Bank, Balaji and Leena Maria had recently cheated an unsuspecting victim of Rs. 76 lakh, with the former introducing himself as an IAS officer and seeking investment for a project.”
On the basis of details available with Chennai Police, DCP Jaiswal said, ground work by Delhi Police revealed that the duo was staying at a farmhouse on the outskirts of Asola village near Fatehpur Beri. A secret watch, the police claimed, was kept on the said farmhouse and the registration numbers of some of the vehicles - including high-end SUVs such as Hummer - were noted down.
“Finally, on the basis of vehicle numbers and on the basis of criminal intelligence, the duo was traced to Ambience Mall in Vasant Kunj in the company of half a dozen musclemen,” said DCP Jaiswal.
Leena Maria and her bodyguards were overpowered and apprehended. Four of the men were found in the possession of illegal fire arms. Balaji slipped away, only to be arrested later.
The duo revealed that they had been staying there for at least a month and had paid Rs. 4 lakh as rent. Nine cars were recovered from their possession. “A case under section 30 of the Arms Act is being registered against the four bouncers as they had not got their weapon licences registered with the Delhi Police which is mandatory,” DCP Jaiswal added.
