Selena Gomez goes desi at MTV Awards

Bollywood-style glamour ruled the 2013 MTV Movie Awards held on Sunday in Culver City, California. American actor-singer Selena Gomez, 20, ditched her girly get-up and dazzled everyone with her bold and sexy desi diva look, leaving the audience agape.

Gomez put up a fiery performance of her new song, Come And Get It, and threw in some Bollywood jhatkas to add to the oomph. She wore a red-hot tattered item-song outfit with thigh-high slits. Her makeup, too, Indian to the T — she wore a big red statement bindi on her forehead, dark kohl in her eyes with silver grey eye-shadow, and her hair cascaded in tousled waves while her lips were painted a smouldering red ala Bollywood heroines. Selena also wore a chunky gold payal (anklet) in her feet to jazz up her look.

Fashion designers say Bollywood is definitely the flavour of the season in the West.

Selena“The red dress is straight out of a Hindi film. What better choice than Bollywood for a young fashion icon like Selena Gomez when it comes to making a bold statement! Indian cinema never fails to fire the imagination of Hollywood actors and fashion designers in the West,” says fashion designer Rina Dhaka.

Designer Nida Mahmood agrees. “Selena Gomez is a fashion inspiration for girls across the world. When she goes for an all-out Bollywood look, there’s no doubt left that Bollywood is a hot trend abroad. The dress is inspired by costumes worn in dance sequences in Hindi films.”

In the past, international pop stars such as Madonna, Katy Perry and Gwen Stefani have been a fan of Indian fashion. Hollywood actors such as Blake Lively and Liz Hurley have also worn saris on different occasions, and design legends of the West have taken inspiration from India. Chanel chief Karl Lagerfeld, for instance, created an India-inspired collection called titled Paris-Bombay, and French footwear designer Christian Louboutin designed a ‘Bollywoody’ line.
