There was a time when winning a beauty paegent was one way of getting Bollywood ticket. Perhaps TV has acquired that right today. Since quite some time now television actors have been making forays into Bollywood. Some have been enviably successful, and call the shots in the industry today, whereas some are yet to makea mark.
Think SRK, think Vidya Balan and think Ayushmann Khurrana. But there are several others who found a foothold in TV and then took the big Bollywood leap. Pavitra Rishta fame TV actor Sushant Singh Rajput is the latest actor to dream big. Here's a lowdown on this interesting trend.
Sushant Singh Rajput
He is set to charm audience once again but this time on the big screen. The actor has already bagged appreciation for the trailer of Abhishek Kapoor's film Kai Po Che. This is Sushant's big Bollywood debut and he will be seen along with other actors such as Amit Sadh, Rajkumar Yadav and Amrita Puri.
Kai Po Che seems to be his launch pad of sorts as it's raining offers for Rajput. The actor has already signed Aamir Khan's P.K. and a YRF project opposite Parineeti Chopra.
Ayushmann Khurrana's career began with the MTV Roadies Season 2 win. This was in 2004. From there he went on to anchor some reality shows.
It was only in 2012 that the actor debuted in Bollywood with Shoojit Sircar's Vicky Donor and shot to overnight fame. His acting was much appreciated by the critics. For the film, he also sung a song Pani Da Rang composed by him and his friend Rochak Kohli.
Khurrana will next be seen in Rohan Sippy's Nautanki Saala co-starring Kunal Roy Kapoor, Evelyn Sharma and Pooja Salvi. Khurrana has sung two songs in this movie, one of which he has composed himself again in collaboration with Rochak Kohli. As they say, no looking back for this er... sperm.
After getting recognised on small screen, Ram Kapoor also switched gears and moved to Bollywood. He has appeared recently in Student Of The Year and Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu.
Kapoor also appeared in minor roles in two films in 2010. The first was the commercial Karthik Calling Karthik, starring Farhan Akhtar and Deepika Padukone with Kapoor playing the role of Kamath. The second, Udaan, was a parallel cinema directed by Vikrmaditya Motwane and under the banner of award-winning filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.
In a daily soap, Bade Acche Lagte Hain and Kapoor enacted the role of Ram Kapoor a business tycoon who is in his mid 40s and is un-married. The role was biggest role of his career that brought him fame and recognition and several accolades. His chemistry with co-star Sakshi Tanwar was also highly appreciated. No wonder the screnn couple won the Best Jodi at The Global Indian Film and TV Honours.
Prachi Desai has also made her mark in Bollywood. The actress rose to fame with her TV show Kasamh Se where she played the character of Bani Walia. Prachi's first film was Rock On!! (2008), she played the wife of Farhan Akhtar. Her performance was highly appreciated. It even got her National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.
Prachi has also appeared in films like Life Partner, Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, Teri Meri Kahaani, Bol Bachchan. The actress will be seen in I, Me, aur Main opposite John Abraham.
Ronit Roy, who currently acts in the Hindi TV serial Adaalat as KD Pathak, has also made his name in Bollywood. In 2010 he starred in the critical acclaimed film Udaan, his work was much praised and won him many best supporting actor awards. Udaan brought Ronit back to the movie scene. He next starred in films like Anurag Kashyap's That Girl in Yellow Boots, Karan Johar's Student of the Year, Deepa Mehta's Midnight's Children.
His upcoming films are Sanjay Gupta's Shootout at Wadala and Anurag Kashyap's Ugly.
Yami Gautam's initial appearances were on television commercials and soap operas like Chand Ke Paar Chalo and Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam. Gautam made her Bollywood debut in Shoojit Sircar's romantic comedy Vicky Donor and gained positive reviews for her performance.
Yami Gautam will next be seen in Aman Ki Asha.
Rajeev was best known for playing lover boy Sujal Garewal in Kahin To Hoga. The actor debuted in Bollywood with Aamir in 2008 and was higly praised for his acting skills.
Recently Rajeev Khandelwal was seen in Shaitan and Table No.21.
Aamna became popular on television with daily soap Kahiin To Hoga opposite Rajeev Khandelwal. Aamna Sharif's charming personality bagged her a Bollywood film Aloo Chaat with Aftab Shivdasani in 2009. Although it didn't give her much success.
She appeared in another film that same year with Shivdasani again, called Aao Wish Karein.
And we kept the best for the last.......
We all know how Vidya Balan made a quick transition from television to Bollywood. The very talented actress used to play the deaf sister in the comedy series Hum Paanch. After a lot of struggle, Vidya made a strong debut with Parineeta opposite Saif Ali Khan.
Post Parineeta, there was no stopping for Balan. She got critical acclaim for her recent film The Dirty Picture and also won National Award for the same. Today she is one of the A-listers in Bollywood.
Shah Rukh Khan
This story doesn't need recounting but to stay factually correct we count THE SRK in this line-up. Shah Rukh Khan burst on the screen with Fauji, Circus and Dil Dariya getting him recognition. He debuted in Bollywood in 1992 with Deewana. Today, he is called the King of Bollywood.
