Ever since Wanted (2008), it has been almost a tradition for Salman Khan to have an Eid release every year. And each year, the box office collections for his films just get better and better. Last year, especially, turned out to be what is touted as the actor’s most successful year, as his
release, Ek Tha Tiger, practically broke all records.
But this year, there seems to be a slight change. Two of Salman’s films — Mental (directed by brother Sohail) and Kick (directed by Sajid Nadiadwala) have been announced. However, there’s no news about the leading ladies, and, as a result, neither of the films have gone on the floors yet.
As the Eid slot remains open, Akshay Kumar has been the first to grab the opportunity. A source reveals, “Akshay, too, has had an equally successful run at the box-office for the last few years. His next big release after Special 26 will be Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2, which will release on Eid this year.”
The source adds, “The Eid slot has always been Salman’s. But this year, Akshay booked it first. And this sequel, which the makers are hoping will turn out to be better that its first installment, has an ensemble cast — all of whom have had good box-office records.”
On being contacted, Ekta Kapoor, who is producing the film says, “Yes, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2 will release on Eid this year.”
Meanwhile, there were rumours about Mental releasing on Eid, but nothing has been confirmed so far. An insider says, “The shoot for Mental hasn’t begun. Even after they finish, there will be post-production work, which usually takes time. And we’re nearing the second month of the year. So there’s no certainty on it as of now.”
