Aamir Khan’s Talaash going steady at the box office

Talaash, which released on November 30, seems to have made enough money for it to be safely termed a hit. Made for Rs. 40 cr, it had good weekend, and is going steady at the box office (BO). The Reema Kagti film stars Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor. On day one, the film made Rs. 14.52 crore. On day two, it raked in Rs. 16.37 crore and, on day three (Sunday), it made Rs. 18.1 crore, taking the total weekend collection to Rs. 48.99 crore. Monday, which was a real test for the film, saw Talaash going steady, pulling in Rs. 6.8 crore. Though the sale of the satellite rights brought in a cost-recovering Rs. 40 crore, the film seems to have got a low opening by the standards Aamir’s past releases have set.

The box-office reports of Talaash have definitely made the makers of the film, producers Aamir Khan, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, more than happy. While the celebrations have already begun, the trade industry too, feels that the movie is here to stay.

Ask trade analyst Taran Adarsh about this and he says, “Talaash is doing extremely well at all multiplexes. The movie was made for a niche audience, but as a matter of fact, it is getting a good response from everyone. It may not be a Rs. 200 crore film, but it is doing very well in its own space.”

However, trade analyst Vikas Mohan feels that the film, though it’s doing well at the box-office, hasn’t managed to live up to the expectations of an Aamir Khan-starrer. He says, “The weekend was very good for the film, but it isn’t as big as we thought it would be.”

Having said that, exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi feels that the minute Aamir’s name is attached to a movie, you know it will do well at the box-office. He says, “Aamir Khan’s name in the opening credits of a film is nothing different from an ISO mark on a can of cola when it comes to the perceptions of critics and a large section of the movie-going audience. Not only have the weekend collections lived up to the expectations of the trade, but the Monday figures have shown that the film is rock solid at the box-office even now. Though the promos of the film had indicated that it caters to a relatively niche audience (metros and the multiplexes primarily), it has found a sizable audience in the tier two cities as well.”

Finding success
Aamir has had a success party every night since the premiere of the film on November 29. On Thursday night, a party was held for the cast and crew of the film. On Friday, Aamir hosted at party at his house while on Saturday and Sunday, parties were held at Ritesh and Farhan’s homes.
