MUMBAI, Nov. 9 -- Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai loves to shoot dramatic movies, with larger than life characters. For his next film Kaanchi, which goes on the floors on January 13, he is signing newcomers with veteran actors like Rishi Kapoor. Joining the ensemble cast is Mithun Chakravarthy who is playing an important role in the film.
Subhash says, "Yes, we have signed Mithun. He plays the godfather of one of the newcomers and archrival to Rishi Kapoor, who plays a flamboyant business tycoon. Both characters are larger than life and have negative shades. Mithun is one of the most talented actors in the film industry and he has never played a character like this one. The way that the role has been conceived, it is one that will need to be watched out for."
Mithun and Rishi pitted against each other on-screen, is reminiscent of one of Subhash's earlier blockbusters Saudagar (1991). The film saw two stalwarts Dilip Kumar and Raj Kumar playing friends-turned-enemies and marked the Bollywood debut of Vivek Mushran and Manisha Koirala. Subhash seems to be repeating history, with Mithun and Rishi in a film up against each other while the newbies fall in love.
The film's younger cast, however, hasn't been finalised. Ask him about the search and he says, "We will start shooting as soon as we finalise the girl. We are selecting boys from the Whistling Woods Acting Studio. But we need a 19 or 20-year-old girl to play the title role. She needs to be a rustic beauty, have natural talent and an aggressive attitude, preferably from north India. Kaanchi is a once-in-alifetime role and even I don't know who's that lucky girl is."
