For the last few days, there has been a buzz in trade circles about Anil Kapoor’s plans to remake the 1980 hit, Khubsoorat, which saw Rekha in an award-winning comic role. Rumours have suggested that Anil was keen to cast daughter Sonam in the film. Now, it seems, not one, but both his daughters will be part of the remake.
While Sonam will play the lead role in the remake, Rhea will be the designated producer. This will be the second time that the sisters Sonam and Rhea will be working together on a film, since Aisha. Rhea had produced the 2010 film, which proved to be dud at the box-office, but was talked about for its music and styling.
Rhea will be producing the film under her father’s banner, Anil Kapoor Films Company. In all likelihood, it will go on the floors around mid next year. Both Rhea and Anil are confident about their decision to cast Sonam. “They feel that she has the same girl-next-door charm that Rekhaji was loved for in the original,” says an insider close to the Kapoors. Apparently, work on the screenplay is already underway, having started as soon as Kapoor bought the rights to the film a few months ago.
There’s also news that suggests that Shashanka Ghosh — who made Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II in 2003 and Quick Gun Murugan in 2009 — will be directing the film. “It will kick off only after Sonam wraps up work on Bhag Milkha Bhaag (Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s film with Farhan Akhtar) and Raanjhnaa (Anand Rai’s film with Dhanush, which releases next year),” the insider adds.
We contacted Anil Kapoor, but he did not comment on the film.
Director Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film, Khubsoorat, cast Rekha in a comic role for the first time. It’s the story of a free-spirited girl, Manju, visiting her married sister, Anju. Manju stirs things up in the strict household, and eventually wins everyone over with her charm. The film also starred Ashok Kumar and Rakesh Roshan.
