Sridevi's comeback stuns BO!
By Hindustan Times
MUMBAI, Oct. 9 -- Not all actors' comeback films are welcomed by the audience. But Sridevi's English Vinglish (EV) has proved its mettle. Despite a slow start, the film managed to pick up pace over the weekend. "Good word-ofmouth publicity helped the business," says trade analyst Taran Adarsh, adding, "EV shatters the unwritten rules of the game. This film proves that it is possible to connect with viewers without making mainstream movies."
The movie has been made within a budget of roughly R15 crore. "Since it's not very expensive, the profits are good. Also, it caters to multiplex and single-screen viewers," says Vinod Mirani, trade analyst. Adarsh adds, "It has collected about R12.6 crore nett in its opening weekend. On Friday it made R2.5 crore; on Saturday R4.35 crore and R5.75 crore on Sunday."
Ashish Saxena, chief operating officer, Big Cinemas says, "The turnout on Sunday was 50 per cent more than what we saw on Saturday, which is a rare happening."
At the time of going to press, exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi informs us, "It remains rock steady at the box-office, even on Monday. Clearly, the film will slowly and steadily march towards its success."
