Freida Pinto wasn’t the only one who added Indian flavour to the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards in California on Sunday night. Actor Guy Pearce’s wife Kate Mestitz flaunted a full-back Ganesha tattoo at the star-studded Hollywood gala while actor Catherine Rusoff turned up in a salwar-kameez, complete with heavy embroidery on the panels, a dupatta and traditional jewellery to go with it.
Style watchers back home are happy to see the global red carpet going desi. “The fact that Kate got Ganesha tattooed shows that she has a fascination for the Hindu god. Most of our gods’ images have beautiful colours and designs,” says celebrity stylist Manjaree Jindal.
“After the Sanskrit shlokas, it’s great to see Hollywood take interest in our scriptures and gods,” says stylist Nisha Kundnani.
The salwar-kameez appearance has left designers pleasantly surprised. “It’s great to see a non-Indian wear a salwar-kameez at an international red carpet event. Perhaps this’ll make more people look eastward for red carpet dressing,” says Delhi-based designer Namrata Joshipura.
