Bappi Lahiri to unveil Boka Chor on Christmas
By Hindustan Times
On Christmas day, singer-composer Bappi Lahiri, whose Ooh La La… from The Dirty Picture has been ruling charts for the last six weeks, will unveil another song, Boka Chor… on YouTube.
This one has been recorded for Dhumketu Punatar’s soon-to-release movie, It’s Rocking Dard-e-Disco. And the Disco King promises that like Ooh La La… that was the song of the year, Boka Chor… will be playing at every Christmas and New Year party and will rock 2012.
If Ooh La La… was inspired by Bappi’s Mawwali chartbuster, Ooi Amma…, then Boka Chor…, he admits, borrows its basic style from Himmatwala’s (1983) Nainon Main Sapna….
However, he is quick to point out that both are Original compositions and admits that retro music of the 1980s, that he specialized in, is back with a bang.
“Even last year, I had Mithun Chakraborty doing a I Am A Disco Dancer… in Golmaal 3 (2010) and the film went on to do a business of Rs 100 crore plus,” he exults.
What makes Boka Chor… unique is the amalgamation of four regional languages in the lyrics. While Boka (foolish) is a Bengali word, Chor (thief) is in Hindi.
Then there’s a line, Don’t be Mr Trash, Taro Paas Koi Class…with Taro being Gujarati for You. “There’s also a phrase, Nee Oru Muttaal…, that’s Tamil for ‘You are a fool’,” Bappi informs.
Prod him on whether the super success of Dhanush’s Kolaveri Di… pushed him into sprinkling his Hindi song with Tamil words and Bappi retorts, “No, Boka Chor… is not my answer to Kolaveri Di… That is a sad song while mine tells the hero not to be a Devdas or a Depression Das.”
