2011: What we googled on google!

By Hindustan Times

Think back. What defined 2011? Anna Hazare protesting at the Ramleela Grounds in Delhi, the sight of Sebastian Vettel speeding down the Buddh Circuit in the Capital, the death of Osama Bin Laden or Salman Khan’s Bodyguard’s phenomenal success? Well, apparently, all of them did, at least according to Google’s Zeitgeist 2011.

The annual list by the search engine was yesterday, included popular and fastest rising seach queries from India in 2011. “We were surprised that more mainstream issues (read Lokpal Bill, Japan’s earthquake and even Aadhar cards) and personsalities (Bhagat Singh, Swami Vivekanand and Baba Ramdev) were in the top searched,” says Lalitesh Katragadda, country head - India products, adding that 70 per cent of the search happened in non-metros.

Interestingly, several unusual personalities made the cut. “We too were surprised to see personalities like Arvind Kejriwal and Baba Ramdev in the list. It shows the times we live in,” says Katragadda. He added that in the news-making events, the Japanese earthquake was an unexpected addition, since it had no apparent India connect. “But it could be a testimony to the reach of cable. Also, this event received a lot of coverage in India.”

And showing that Dhanush’s recent rage, Kovaveri Di is no fluke, the list of top movies searched included a healthy mix of Bollywood, south Indian films and even Hollywood. Katragadda says, “I was just joking today that Mahesh babu is rubbing shoulders with Salman Khan in our list.” Hope Salman’s taken note too.
