Just a few days before the release of 7 Khoon Maaf, Priyanka Chopra, who plays Susanna in the Vishal Bhardwaj film, admits she has incorporated certain traits of her mother Madhu in what is the “most challenging role” in her decade-long career.
“The similarity between Susanna and my mother is in the way they carry themselves—dignified, stoic and women of few words. While I was going through the script, I knew these aspects of mum would suit Susanna perfectly. You’ll find these traits consistent once Susanna’s starts ageing,” says Chopra. The international make-up artists working on her various looks referred to pictures of Priyanka’s female relatives to decide what would suit her best.
“They’ve worked on films like The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. They’re very professional and wanted to get my ageing process right,” states the actor, who often spent over five hours on the make-up chair before shooting. Commenting on her skin being stretched, glued and darkened, Chopra adds, “For every ageing process, they would add more wrinkles, fine lines and dark spots that naturally occur as we age.
Of course, the looks would have been incomplete without the right amount of weight gain, which I did from time to time.” Of the seven age groups, Chopra says she relates most with Susanna in her 20s. “It’s the age bracket I am in right now. I can’t even begin to imagine what I will look like in the years to come. But if I had to choose, the last stage in the film, when Susanna is in her 60s, is the closest to what I think I would look like when I am older,” says Chopra whose look in the film alters according to the men she marries between ages 20 and 65. “She is so consumed by them that she begins to be just like they want her to be!”
