Unlike many actors of his generation, veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, continues to leave an everlasting appeal in the minds of the audience, thanks to his recent acts in films such as Ishqiya and The Dirty Picture.
The 61 year old, whose latest outing, Chaalis Chauraasi, releases today, says, “I am really happy that I am doing light-hearted roles. I was tired of doing intense and emotional scenes. I don’t want to do it any more. I want to have fun.”
NaseerElaborating more on his recent transformation, the actor says, “I am glad people loved the new side of me that they got to see. It feels great that even at the age of 60 people think of me as a character who could be in love. I hope 20 years on, people will see another side of me.”
The actor, who has been part of films such as Mirch Masala, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Ata Ha, Mandi and Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro in the 70s and 80s, feels that his latest films have helped him connect more with much younger audiences.
“It’s stimulating and gives me happiness. I have been introduced to a younger audience. Moreover, the success of my latest films has ensured that I get another innings to bat, and my smaller films will perhaps benefit from the same. I have 30 unreleased films from earlier times,” says the actor, who plays a cop in Chaalis Chauraasi. And, finally, is he game for a sequel to The Dirty Picture? “Yes, but the sequel should say more than the original!”
On his transformation
I am glad people loved the new side of me that they got to see. Honestly, Ishqiya was first time I was cast as a character in love, which was realistic. I have always played idealist characters.
On the Ishqiya sequel
You will see me in the sequel whenever it is made. I don’t know when that is happening though. As far as I know, the casting is not yet done. Arshad and I am going to be there.
On upcoming projects
I am doing Kabeer Kaushik’s Maximum, an intense drama where I play an encounter specialist. Then there is Michael, a film about a retired cop, who is losing his vision and sanity.
