2014: The year of erotica in Bollywood..

When former adult film star Sunny Leone danced to Baby Doll in Ragini MMS 2 earlier this year, it seemed like the ultimate fantasy for many.

Then came Surveen Chawla and Jay Bhanushali who upped the oomph quotient between satin sheets in Hate Story 2, followed by Mastram — a fictional biography of a pornographic writer. Then, last month saw Randeep Hooda and Nandana Sen indulge in arthouse erotica in Rangrasiya, while newbie Mannara hit headlines with her topless poster for Zid. Sex was certainly the biggest seller at the box office in 2014.

Film trade analyst Atul Mohan says that the trend is here to stay. “The temperature is going to soar further with more skinshow and erotic content in 2015. Just see the lineup — Mastizaade, Kya Kool Hai Hum 3, Hate Story 3, Ragini MMs 3 and so many are already planned.” Agrees film distributor and analyst Girish Johar. “Skin show had a good strike rate in Bollywood this year, but it didn’t work for the films in which it looked forced. The public has access to the internet so they will not spent 300 bucks at the multiplex only to watch a sleaze show,” says Johar.

While sex did sell well on the screen, bold scenes often had to face the wrath of critics and moral police. “I think too much importance is being given to the boldness aspect, while for any actor, it’s just another role,” says Hate Story 2 actor Surveen Chawla. Actor Mannara says she wouldn’t mind doing a bold act if the 'script demands'. Director Bhushan Patel of Ragini MMS 2 says, “We make films for the masses, not for the critics, and as long as the film is making money and we are not making a ‘cheap blue film’, nobody should have a problem with bold scenes.”
