A super time for Bollywood!

New Delhi, Nov. 22 -- The huge success of the Hrithik Roshan-starrer Krrish 3 (the film has grossed 238 crore in three weeks) seems to have set the 'superhero films' ball rolling in India.

Following this success, a total of three desi superhero films have been announced, out of which, at least two will feature Bollywood A-listers as superheroes. While one of them is filmmaker Ayan Mukerji's next with actor Ranbir Kapoor playing a man with superpowers, the other is filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane's movie with actor Imran Khan.

Though Imran has said in a recent interview that his character in the film, Bhavesh Joshi, will not have any superpowers, the buzz is that he is playing a vigilante loosely inspired by Batman. The third movie, titled Raftaar Singh Superfast, is being helmed by filmmaker Saurabh Varma of Mickey Virus fame. And Varma tells us that he wants to cast Akshay Kumar in the lead.

However, Bollywood has had its share of superhero films in the 1980s and early '90s, but it is only now that this genre is finding the audiences' acceptance, feel industry insiders. "I think the current generation has grown up on Western comics and are more aware about superheroes. So, they are open to such subjects," says Varma, whose film will be a superhero comedy. "My story is about a lazy Punjabi guy who gains superpowers by eating samosas. It's an original idea and the characters in the film will be rooted in Delhi and Punjab," adds Varma.

Film experts feel that Krrish 3's big revenue and the audience's interest in the genre has prompted other filmmakers to consider making superhero films. "What worked in Krrish's favour was an engaging story. If the upcoming superhero flicks have solid scripts, they might do well too," says film trade analyst Komal Nahta. Adds trade analyst Taran Adarsh, "Indians can relate to this concept because we have so many super-powered beings in our mythology. This genre has much potential."
