New Delhi, Dec. 27 -- Debutant director Girish Malik's national award winning film Jal has found a place in the Oscar contenders of 2014 in two categories.
It has moved ahead among the top 114 contenders for the best original score category in the Academy Awards. Composers Sonu Nigam and Bickram Ghosh for Jal and AR Rahman for Kochadaiiyan are the only entries from India to advance in this list. Jal is also in contention for the best picture in the Oscars long list.
Also, the film's screenplay has been invited and inducted in the permanent core collections of the Oscar library. "The film is selected alongside path-breaking films like Interstellar, Hunger Games and 300 - Rise of an Empire," says Malik.
Shot in the Rann of Kutch, the film is based on the global issue of water scarcity and brings out the dark side of human beings. "We went through a lot of hardship and struggle in making this film. It took four years in making and many years for script research and development," says Malik.
The film stars actors Purab Kohli, Tannishtha Chatterjee and Kirti Kulhari in lead roles.
