India's Bajrangi Bhaijaan hit in Pak: Can movies improve ties?

By HT

Thanks to Salman Khan’s hit film Bajrangi Bhaijaan, the hall owners in Pakistan are minting money. Pakistan’s decision to lift the ban on Indian films has been good for the people who earn their bread and butter through the movie business.

Hindi films were officially banned in Pakistan after the war of 1965 and the restrictions began to be eased from 2006 onwards. But Pakistan’s federal and provincial censor boards have kept a strong check on Indian films.

As a result, films such as Agent Vinod, David and Khiladi 786 were banned in Pakistan, where the security establishment and intelligence agencies clamp down on anything that shows them in a poor light.

However, the situation is different now, and Indian films are opening up new avenues in Pakistan.
