Do we really have to introduce John Abraham? After an acclaimed performance in Kabul Express, he is all set to be seen in Nikhil Advani’s next film Salaam-E-Ishq. He spoke to us in an IndiaFM exclusive interview about his forthcoming film and his opinion on love.
We would like to know something about Salaam-E-Ishq. How did it happen to you? Did Nikhil approach to you or you were keen to work with him after his hit movie, Kal Ho Na Ho?
No, nothing like that. Nikhil approached me with the script and I liked the story and I said that I will do it. My intension of signing movies is not whether directors have got hits in the past or flops in the past and I work with directors on my gut feel and scripts. I like Salaam-E-Ishq. I love the story and it has turned out beautifully. I am very happy with my track. I was not given the option of any other track and it has turned out beautifully. Vidya and I share a great chemistry and my name is Ashu in the movie.
Tell us something about your character?
My name is Ashu and I am a news channel editor and my wife Tehzeeb played by Vidya is a news reporter in the same channel. We are completely in love, hopelessly and helplessly in love with each other till a certain event happens in our life and everything changes for us.
How is Nikhil as a director?
Nikhil is a fine young man, very hyper but nice. I jokingly call him psycho but he is a nice guy.
I have another version of Nikhil that he is very funny guy.
No he is a psycho and hyper.
You are working with Vidya for the first time, how was the chemistry?
We share great onscreen chemistry and it was fun working with her because we share the same interest in life.
Kabul Express is a hit. After Kabul, this is your next movie, and it has huge star cast. Do you think that you are going to get lost somewhere in a multistarer movie?
Of course I will get lost. They all are stars, obviously I will get lost but it is fun getting lost. It is nice to have a multistarer movie because I feel that sometimes you get an opening but I have been a part of huge multistarers. But I was told do not worry. It is an investment and it has never got an opening also. So I do not believe in this multistarer thing. If the movie is good movie, it will do well. If it is not a good movie, it won't do well. Kabul Express was supposed to sell on Arshad Warsi and me. It is a very nice film, it is doing pretty descent business for itself but that is because all due credits to the director not to the actor.
Are these six stories interconnected somewhere?
I meet Akshaye Khanna, his story and my story is connected. So each couple has got its story and they are entangled with the other and mine crosses Akshaye's story.
Music is great.
Yes, music is really nice. I think it is doing pretty well for itself but at this point, if you ask me, at the risk of sounding boastful, Salaam-e-Ishq has the best music right now that is running in the Indian film industry off late. It has got the best music, the most hummable music and the most fun music.
Which are your three favourite songs in the movie?
Dil kya kare, mera dil and yarabba, yarabba is my most favourite song that is the slow song. I think it is beautiful. People may like other songs but this is the song that is going to stay for a long time. It is just like my first movie Jism, a lot of people like Jadu hai nasha hai but awarapan was the song that is my favourite and it stayed and that is still in my head till today.
What are your next projects?
I have No Smoking with Anurag Kashyap. I am doing Nikhil's next production with Vikram Motwani. That is another film with me and Vidya. Nikhil believes that he has discovered me and Vidya together. So we are going to do a movie together. I have Shriram Raghavan's movie called Happy Birthday with Aishwarya and some films here and there.
What genre’s are they?
My next film is Goal. It’s a movie on football that is with Bipasha, Boman Irani, Arshad Warsi again who is more than a friend now. That is a fun movie on football. Each movie is different. I want to do different movies. I want people to understand that if they see John Abraham’s movie at least from now on post Kabul Express that they expect something different and that is what I am trying to do.
How do you define Ishq?
It is a state of mind. It is a thing that could get you ecstatic. It is a feeling and emotion that gets you ecstatic at the same time, something that could scare you. A lot of people say that you always fall in love, never rise in love. So there are ways of describing your feelings towards love and we have all got burnt our fingers. At the same time you have beautiful moments. So love is like a twenty-four hour crash. It just does not seem to end.
Is love life, or life is love?
That each one to his own, you all decide. For me, life is a lot more than just about love. There are a lot more things that make life very special and I think that is what it is about. It is about relationships. Some love, some not so much in love but still relationships.
Do you relate love to lust, passion. If you do then how?
No, the problem is that most of us are in lust and we think that we are in love. That is one big problem that all of us have and then you get into the relationships and you realize that you are in lust and not in love till you fall in lust with someone else. But I think that it is very important to define what you really feel in your mind before getting into something otherwise you are in a mess and most of us are always in a mess. Salaam-E-Ishq.
