Trust Aamir Khan to come up with a googly every over. The maverick actor has been visiting the aam aadmi across the nooks and crannies of India in a unique promotional drive for his forthcoming release 3 Idiots.

Aamir, who had 'gone missing' on 11th December, has since reappeared in Varanasi, remote villages in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, Kolkata and Jaipur, spending some time with common folks and inviting them to the premiere of the film in Mumbai. Kareena Kapoor, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly have also added the glam quotient so far to this innovative promotional drive.

Bollywood Hungama takes a quick wrap up of the journey so far…

On December 11, Aamir Khan launched an 'alternative reality game' for 3 Idiots. Khan, it was announced, had 'disappeared' for the next two weeks and would be travelling incognito across parts of India, giving clues which would help in finding which city Khan is located in.

Meanwhile Sachin Tendulkar read out the first clue after watching 3 Idiots along with his family and friends at Dev Anand's preview theatre, Ketnav in Mumbai.

Aamir was then spotted two days later in Varanasi, Khan's mom's birth place. Disguised as an elderly man, the actor retraced his roots and visited teliya nala the locality his mom had spend her child hood in.

He also visited Dasaswamedh Ghat a place frequented by his mom.

On December 14, Aamir was joined by Kareena Kapoor, who plays his love interest in 3 Idiots and the duo spent the entire day and night at a village, Pranpur, Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh.

Chanderi is famous for its hand-woven Chanderi sarees. Aamir wanted to highlight the plight of these weavers and pledge to support their cause. He made friends here and invited a couple of people to his film's premiere in Mumbai.

On December 16, Aamir walked the streets of Kolkata and went knocking on the doors of Sourav Ganguly's bungalow posing as a fan disguised with long hair and tattoos. He kept insisting on meeting his favorite Sourav Dada .

He finally re-appeared at night in his normal get-up with wife Kiran by his side and had dinner with Sourav and his family and spent the entire evening and better part of night at Sourav's house.

Then from Kolkata to Gujarat. Despite the earlier controversies surrounding the release of his films Fanaa and Taare Zameen Per in Gujarat, Aamir visited a Gandhian school, Lok Niketan, in Palanpur. Aamir spent the entire morning asking the kids about their dreams and aspirations.

Scouting around the country is not an easy task. Travelling from Ahmedabad to Jaipur by road, Aamir paid visit to a doctor in Jaipur who was surprised to see him in the middle of the night. According to the doctor, Aamir has fallen sick because of a change in weather at the areas where he was traveling. The doctor advised him to take at least three days rest but Aamir has left to an undisclosed location after having tea and spending few hours at the doctor's place. And of course posing with them for the pictures.

Though the whole promotional drive has received extensive media coverage and elicited some public interest, how far it goes in helping the film's box office fortunes remains to be seen. But knowing Aamir as we do, it's difficult to imagine that his efforts would come to naught.
