He is the latest actor-turned-producer on the block. And even as John Abraham’s firm, JA Entertainment readies for the release of its maiden production Vicky Donor, the actor is clear about the kind of cinema he wants to produce under his banner. In fact, the Dostana (2008) actor wants to follow the model of producers Aamir Khan and Farhan Akhtar.
“Evn though I have turned producer, I am not saying I have a perfect grasp on cinema. But to a large extent, someone who comes close to it is Farhan (Akhtar) and his company, Excel Entertainment. If there were models I would love to follow in terms of quality, they are Excel and Aamir Khan Productions,” says John, who understands the importance of co-existing as a producer as well as an actor.
“So, John Abraham walking out of the sea in a yellow trunk will always exist but that won’t be the only thing for me,” he says. “The idea is to grow JA Entertainment into a huge brand in itself. It has to be bigger than the person, John Abraham. Right now, I am the proprietor of my company, but very soon, I want to be an employee of my company.”
John, whose next production will be Aditya Bhattacharya’s Kala Ghoda — that will also feature Kunaal Roy Kapoor of Delhi Belly (2011) fame — says he always wanted to produce the kind of films he loves. “And fortunately, the audience today is watching films that I believe in. I want to make typical hardcore and commercial films. But they should be something that young viewers should lap up and say, ‘this is the kind of movie I want to see.’ I feel that right now, as an industry, we are following the diktats of commercial filmdom a bit too much,” he says.
