New Delhi, Aug. 26 -- International supermodel of Indian origin, Ujjwala Raut, has won complete custody of her five-year-old daughter Ksha after a bitter divorce with husband Craig Maxwell Sterry.
"In an effort to project himself as an angel, Maxwell tried to turn me into a devil .... I had to protect my child. Today, I have full custody of Ksha, and that's only right because Maxwell was never involved in her life. He never performed his duties as a father," says the 33-year-old, who recently turned heads at the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai.
Raut married the British model-turned-entrepreneur in 2004. In 2009, she filed for divorce, alleging that she was afraid for her three-year-old daughter's life and her own. She accused Maxwell of "living off her hard-earned money, cruelty and emotional suffering." Sterry, in turn, said she was mad and that she chased him around "with a knife in her hand". The high-profile case raised eyebrows worldwide.
Today, Raut says she is over the rough patch, thanks to work. "When my personal life was going through hell, I was walking the ramp at the Paris Fashion Week and doing a show with Naomi Campbell. My work was the one thing that kept me sane," she says. However, she's not giving up faith in marriage yet.
"No way, everyone needs a partner who understands you because when this face, body, fame and high life is gone, it's that person you turn to. My parents are happily married and I still believe in the institution."
