I like to challenge myself: Dhanush

Kolavari Di sensation Dhanush says it’s unlikely that he will share screen-space with his superstar father-in-law Rajinikanth. Post his Bollywood debut Raanjhanna that releases on June 21, the actor is open to limited singing offers. HT City caught up with the actor during his recent visit to

Varanasi musings
“It was a beautiful experience to be in the holy city. Banarasi food is great and we would start savouring the dishes early in the morning. The city has amazing vibes and it was wonderful to shoot in the sun. We practically captured all the natural shades of light,” he says.

In the film promo we see him speak fluent Hindi. Has it been dubbed by someone?
No! I have myself recorded all the dialogues. While shooting, I would read Hindi in the Roman script. Then I would translate each word and understand its meaning. Afterwards I’d speak in the Varanasi dialect. I had to work a lot on my accent and diction. Then we recorded the entire film in Hindi and this was really tough for me. But, I like to challenge myself. I have still not gained enough confidence to speak in Hindi, but I am working on it.

We also see him climb a temple dome?
It was more difficult than it looks on screen. It was even more challenging for me as I have vertigo! But I climbed it successfully and am happy that it came out well.

Was it difficult to get that teen look?
Well it was very simple! I just had to clean shave myself and do all the things I had done a couple of years back.

Will sing, but later!
Despite Kolavari Di becoming a rage, we don’t listen to Dhanush in Raanjhanna?
I would have loved to sing but I am not a trained singer! Things like Kolavari Di just happen and they can’t be replicated. Nor did I get this movie for that song. The director did not want to cash in on my success. I’m happy and content with the tremendous work done by AR Rahman and team,” he says on a humble note.

Is Dhanush not open to playback singing for Bollywood?
I’m still learning Hindi. I had a number of offers but Anand sir (director) did not want me to sing till the film’s release. Since I am untrained, I can sing within a certain range. If something goes with my comfort level, I am open to it.

Recently, you tweeted about doing another film with Anand L Rai?
Yes, we will be doing another film together. It’s still in a nascent stage and we expect to bring it on floors next year. We have two separate scripts ready between which we have to choose one. But, it’s surely not the Tanu Weds Manu sequel. I intend to do a Tamil movie and then a Hindi film. That’s my plan as of now.

On remakes
In his 12-year-long career in the Tamil film industry, Dhanush has delivered a string of hits and award winning films. Can some of these be remade in Hindi?
There are few films which can surely be turned into good Hindi movies. Remakes of two of them are already underway, unfortunately without me.

And, what about Aadukalam that fetched him ‘best actor’ and the film National Award?
It can’t be made, it’s very tough to make it. Even I can’t attempt to do the same role again. Some things can’t be repeated and one has to see it to believe.

Any plans to come together with Rajinikanth?
Looks pretty unlikely. Not just me but I guess everyone down South and even people in other industries want to work with him and so do I. But I feel it’s practically difficult to come together. Also, he is doing fewer films.
