Karan Johar’s decision to judge celebrity dancers on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5 on Colors came as a surprise to many. Earlier this year, he announced that his celebrity chat show, Koffee With Karan, will return with its fourth season in a new format. It’s now slated to return only next summer.
“I’m still working on my movie, Student Of The Year. And I have to give it my 200 per cent, considering it’s my first endeavour with newcomers. I don’t want to be distracted by another project,” explains Karan, adding, “Koffee With Karan is not an easy show to handle. It takes a lot of effort to put everything together.”
Jhalak..., however, he says, lets him take a break: “It’s easier judging the dance show because I don’t have to do all the running around. I just have to provide my honest point of view as a judge, which is not asking too much,” says Karan, adding, “Once the show wraps up in September, I’ll channel all my energy in promoting Student Of The Year that releases soon after.”
Considering the expectations from the dance show, is he personally under pressure to influence the TRPs with his presence? “I don’t know what works for TRPs. I just know I have to judge with complete honesty and be as unbiased as I can be,” says Karan. Is he expected to dance at any point?
“I won’t, because I can’t dance the way others can. Farah (Khan) and Remo (D’Souza) are choreographers first and then filmmakers. It’s easier for them. Not for poor filmmakers like me... We’re Pappus who can’t dance saala (sic)!”
