The year 2007 has seen many promising newcomers like Ranbir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Ruslaan Mumtaz, Neil Mukesh and Deepika Padukone make their mark in Bollywood. Come 2008 and the first few weeks of the New Year itself would see yet another promising actor making his debut. The man in question is Nikhil Dwivedi, who stars in the film My Name is Antony Gonsalves opposite Amrita Rao. The film would be directed by E Niwas.

On being asked how it felt to be the first debutant of the New Year, Nikhil seemed pretty confident and replied, “You can’t attach calendars to these things. All of us are there in a common time zone. In the end, the hardworking people who are backed by their destinies will stay.” Tell him that expectations are high since the movie is being backed by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment and Nikhil clarifies, “Red Chillies’ interest in the film is something which is very much from the outside. They have been very kind to lend us office support, thereby giving shape to our project. It remains at that and there is nothing more to it. Its not like Red Chillies is producing the film or launching me.”

His debut film may still be a couple of weeks away from release but the new kid on the block is already making news for the number of films that he has signed. The latest buzz doing the rounds is that he is playing the lead in the remake of the 1985 Sunny Deol starrer Arjun. Says Nikhil, “Yes, I am doing the remake of Arjun and it would be directed by Shivam Nair. The premise would be similar but the story would be completely different because the problems that we were facing in the mid 80’s aren’t relevant anymore as there has been a huge shift in the society.” As for acquiring the rights of the film from Shah Rukh Khan, he clarifies, “It’s not true that SRK has given me the rights. The rights do belong to him. There is an informal understanding that we can go ahead with the film but the new producers will have to go and acquire it from Shah Rukh at a later stage.”

Lastly, when asked about some of his other projects Nikhil replies, “I have signed a film with Risk Advertising and Media Limited which stars Javed Jaffery, Anupam Kher, Johnny Lever and many such character artists. Apart from this Sahara Motion Pictures has signed me for two films. They have given me the freedom to choose the scripts and freeze in on the directors.”

Well, looking at the way this youngster has kick-started his career, one thing is sure that there is no looking back for Nikhil Dwivedi.
