This Dusshera, corruption will burn!

By Hindustan Times

This Dusshera, it’s not Raavan, but corruption that Delhi wants to burn forever. Inspired by Anna Hazare’s campaign against corruption, which swept the nation last month, the theme has become central to Ramlila celebrations in the city. Effigies of Raavan will be stuffed with firecrackers, and their burning will symbolise the end of corruption.

“All three effigies —Raavan, Kumbhakaran and Meghnath — which symbolise evil — will each wear a necklace that will say bhrashtachar (corruption). This will mark the riddance of evil from society,” says Ravi Jain of Shri Dharmik Leela Committee. Organised at the Red Fort grounds, this is one of the oldest Ramlilas in the Capital, dating back to 1923. “It is important for a Ramlila to represent the greatest evil of current times,” adds Jain.

At the Luv Kush Ramlila, which is held in Old Delhi, the Raavan effigy will have the word corruption written on it. “Our Raavan is over 100 feet tall, and on its torso, we will write corruption. It will be very impactful,” says Arjun Kumar of the Luv Kush Ramlila Committee.

“We did not want to change the symbolism of the traditional effigies, so we introduced a fourth one, named Corruption. This year, the country woke up to the fact that this is the biggest evil of our society, and that is what this will represent,” says Mahender Nagpal of the Ashok Vihar Ramlila Committee.

“Our fourth effigy will be Corruption. While Anna Hazare was protesting, we realised that more than anything else, people want to see the end of corruption,” says Sardar Manjeet Singh, President, Shri Ramleela Committee, Greater Noida.

Ramlila on phone
The Nav Shri Dharmik Leela, which is held near the Red Fort, has started a hi-tech initiative which will allow people to follow the Ramlila live from wherever they are. “People will have to dial a particular number, and they will be able to hear the live audio transmission of the Ramlila. Those who want to catch the video can go to our official website and tune into it,” says Rahul Sharma of the committee.

The effigies of Raavan, Kumbhakaran and Meghnath will wear a necklace each, which will say bhrashtachar (corruption).
