Punjabi influx in Bollywood!

Yo Yo Honey Singh

Mumbai, Sept. 27 -- While Bollywood is known to attract artistes from across the world, this year has seen a large number of Punjabi musicians try their luck in Hindi films.

While Mika Singh and Yo Yo Honey Singh, who are already ruling the roost in the music space, have tried their hands at acting, other popular names like Badshah and Manj Ral have composed for Hindi films for the first time. The latest to join the bandwagon is actor-singer Gippy Grewal, who will soon make his Bollywood acting debut. We look at the trend.

Latest work: Made his acting debut with The Xpose; recent songs as a composer and singer include 'Aata majhi satakli' (Singham Returns) and 'Chaar botal vodka' (Ragini MMS 2). Honey is perhaps the busiest musician in Bollywood currently.

He is composing and singing for Hindi films, shaking a leg with A-list actors in the videos of some of these tracks, and is now acting too. He says he has "immense respect for actors" and considers acting "the most difficult art form". While he prefers being called a "maker" and not just a playback singer, Honey adds that he still has a long way to go in the industry. "Since I was offered projects by big people in Bollywood, I have got a lot of expansion. I am working on many interesting projects," he says.

Latest work: Will make his debut as a Bollywood actor and producer with Balwinder Singh Famous Ho Gaya. Mika has been doing playback in Bollywood films since 2007. And, after creating a unique identity as a singer, he will soon make his debut as an actor. In a recent interview, Mika told us, "I'd never given acting a serious thought; it just happened to me. People want to see me on screen, and that's why I decided to act." He has also co-produced his debut film and plans to produce more in the future. He says, "I want to produce films that will offer work to new singers, composers and writers."

Latest work: Has written and sung 'Abhi toh party shuru hui hai' (Khoobsurat) and 'Saturday Saturday' (Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania). Punjabi singer, songwriter and rapper Badshah made inroads into the Hindi film industry recently. He says, "I want to make good music and make my space in Bollywood. I never thought I will get to associate with big names like Karan Johar, but with the kind of work I was doing, Bollywood was certainly the next step."

Latest work: Composed music for Heropanti and has sung a track in Happy New Year. After splitting from UK-based band RDB, vocalist and music producer Manjeet Singh Ral, better known as Manj, composed his first Bollywood single under the banner Manj Musik in the film Heropanti this year. "I love the way Bollywood's music scene is growing, and Punjabi music has got a massive response in Hindi films. I am working on many film music projects. I have recently released a song called 'Sharabi' from Happy New Year. There is another song starring Akshay Kumar. I am also working with Sajid Nadiadwala and Sabbir Khan," says Man

Latest work: Will make his Bollywood acting debut with Second Hand Husband. The popular Punjabi actor/singer, known for his song, 'Angrezi beat' with singer Yo Yo Honey Singh, was "very keen on acting in Bollywood films", and his journey will kick off with Second Hand Husband, which is likely to release next March. Gippy says, "I am making my debut alongside Govindaji's (actor) daughter, Narmada. I wanted to start my Hindi film acting career with a concept-oriented film to make an impression, and this film is just that. I am also working on two big-budget commercial films apart from focusing on Bollywood music."
