India mourns Tom Alter's death..

Actor Tom Alter’s death on Friday night left India mourning. The actor, theatre personality, journalist and a poetry enthusiast was earlier diagnosed with skin cancer, which had relapsed. 
 
In a statement, his family said on Saturday morning, “It is with sadness we announce the death of Tom Alter, actor, writer, director, Padma Shri, and our dear husband and father.”
 
Earlier, Tom Alter’s son Jaime had told IANS, “It is what is called a squamous cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer). It is a relapse of the same thing which had happened last year and unfortunately, for various reasons, it was not detected at that time and has come back.”
 
The 67-year-old actor was born in Mussoorie. Son of American missionaries, he studied at Mussoorie’s famed Woodstock School and Pune’s Film and Television Institute (FTII).
 
His work, spanning over 300 films, saw him acting in Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Telugu and Bengali films. He also worked in a number of TV series. His films include Parida, Sardar, Aashiqui and Shatranj Ke Khiladi among others. He also wrote on cricket for various publications.
 
He is survived by his wife Carol, son Jamie and daughter Afshaan.
 
The news of Tom Alter’s death left people mourning and many took to Twitter to pay their last respects. While cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle called him “fine actor, pure sports lover and kind human being”, Resul Pookutty said “working in his last film was like a premonition”.
 
Manoj Bajpayee wrote on Twitter, “May you rest in peace tom sir!!condolences to his near and dear ones.”
 
Vir Das, who has worked with the actor earlier, wrote, “He was the perfect example of a humble talented artist with a gigantic legacy.”
 
Actor Nimrat Kaur tweeted, “Waking up to some tragic news about the passing away of Mr. Tom Alter. A one of a kind, grace personified, thorough gentleman. #RIPTomAlter.”
