Bollywood's cricket series!

Sushant Singh Rajput

New Delhi, Feb. 25 -- In a country where cricket is almost second religion and cricketers enjoy demi-God status, it's not surprising that Bollywood, too, is smitten by the craze.

So, while shooting is on in full swing for the biopics of Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and former batsman Mohammad Azharuddin, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar's biopic also went on floors, recently.

Adding to the list is the film based on India's win in the 1983 World Cup. While industry experts are upbeat about the trend, the actors portraying the characters feel it's a big responsibilty.

"Dhoni is loved by millions. There is always a big responsibility when you are portraying such a character on screen," actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who will play Dhoni, had told us in a recent interview.

Trade analyst Atul Mohan feels that considering the popularity of the sport here, this is only expected to spell success at the box office. "India has two religions, cinema and cricket, and with coming together of these two one can expect fireworks at the box office," says Mohan, adding, "Biopics are the latest trend, and Sachin and Dhoni are the current heartthrobs. Azhar and Kapil are also popular and many youngsters want to know more about them. So this is a perfect amalgamation of cricket and cinema."

Sachin Tendulkar

London-based writer and filmmaker James Erskine is directing a film on the life of Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar that will see the legend playing himself on screen. The film promises "never seen before facets and footage" on Sachin, said Ravi Bhagchandka, from the production company, in a statement. The banner has already collated reels of archival footage of Sachin's cricketing journey from being a 16-year-old Little Master to a legend of the sport.

Kapil Dev

While National Award-winning filmmaker Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan's film based on India's win in the 1983 World Cup was announced last year, the latest buzz is that actor Arjun Kapoor (above, left) has been offered to play the role of the team's then captain and noted right-arm pace bowler, Kapil Dev. The makers have reportedly met Arjun with the script.

Md Azharuddin

Emraan Hashmi will essay the role of Mohammad Azharuddin in an upcoming biopic that's being directed by Kunal Deshmukh. The film will cover Azhar's life, from a 17-year-old cricket buff to his ascent as the captain of the Indian cricket team. This Ekta Kapoor production will also have glimpses of the controversies that Azhar was embroiled in the later years.
