Sonam: People who criticise me are ignorant!

Sonam Kapoor

New Delhi, Sept. 30 -- Be it about showing the middle finger at a press conference, calling actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan 'auntie' or taking a different stand on the recent Deepika Padukone cleavage controversy, actor Sonam Kapoor has never shied away from speaking her mind. Although it has often put her in a tight spot, the 29-year-old has no qualms admitting that she is indeed 'moohfat'.

"Yes, I'm a moohfat. Everybody knows I have a foot-in-mouth syndrome ... like all five toes," laughs the actor.

Sonam often gets criticised for her candid remarks, but she doesn't feel that professional rivalry or jealousy is the reason why people do that to her. "It's not jealousy ... you know what it is? It is ignorance. There is a problem in India - we are ignorant - and that makes us backward, that's the only thing," explains Sonam, who finds it strange that people judge her all the time.

"Don't judge anything or anybody when you don't see the full picture. But then I understand, it's because they don't know better. You know when you conform to a certain society, and you are conditioned to be a certain way, you don't know things. It's like telling a young girl who's never been out of the house that the world is scary ... she has not seen the world so she'll automatically think that the world is that way (when it is not). So if you keep telling somebody that you can't speak your mind, you can't do this, you can't do that, you need to be prim and proper and sati-savitri ... that's what girls start to think is right," says the actor, adding that all she feels is pity for people who judge.

"When you're conditioned that way, it's very difficult to break it. I don't think they are wrong, I just feel sorry for them. I can't judge them ... I just feel bad for them," says Sonam.
