Kaante sequel in the pipeline!

Mumbai, Dec. 22 -- In 2002, when Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Mahesh Manjrekar and company's bank heist movie hit the screens, film-maker Sanjay Gupta faced many allegations of having ripped off Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs (1992).

That aside, the multi-starrer went on to become a big box-office winner. Now, 12 years later, Gupta has plans to bring back the three main characters from the original film for a sequel.

"We have a fantastic script," says Gupta, who will be reviving the characters of Ajju, Major and Baali (played by Dutt, Bachchan and Manjrekar respectively). "Since, in the first movie, all three had died by the end, you will have to suspend your disbelief when you watch the sequel. We are starting the film saying, 'What if they were alive? If they hadn't died and met 15-20 years later, what would happen?' For Kaante fans, this film will be a treat," adds Gupta.

Interestingly, the director has already discussed the idea of the film with Dutt. "Yes, he knows about it. We are working on the script together. We have discussed it in detail. Even when he wrote to me (from jail), he said, 'In my head, I am thinking and thrashing out what more we can do with it (sic).' Even before he went in, we were working on it," says the filmmaker, adding that when Dutt comes out, they will discuss the idea in more detail.

"And once Sanju is out for good, and whenever he is ready to work on the script, I am there. I have discussed it at length with Mahesh too. I haven't had the opportunity to discuss it with Amitji yet. Whenever I get that chance, I will do it. Sanju told me he has spoken to Amitji about it," says Gupta, who starts work on his next starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Irrfan Khan next month, followed by the John Abraham, Anil Kapoor-starrer.
