Bollywood: A filmy turn to biopics?

New Delhi, Nov. 14 -- There have been a plethora of biopics on celebrities from all walks of life, except probably, the film industry itself. However, now it seems the industry is ready to look within, and a few biopics have also been proposed on veterans from showbiz. Films on the lives of actors Meena Kumari, Sanjay Dutt and singers Kishore Kumar and Bhupen Hazarika are on the anvil.

Speaking about why making films on industry insiders isn't easy, filmmaker Milan Luthria who made The Dirty Picture, inspired by the life of actor Silk Smitha, says, "Making these films is like looking into the mirror. After all, we are made up of the same DNA, we have the same fears, same highs and lows. The Dirty Picture was very emotionally draining for me. Also, I feel that people from the film industry want to guard their lives." Trade analyst Komal Nahta says that biopics on people from showbiz aren't made because the audience doesn't relate to their starry lives: "I don't think they relate to them. But I feel if one such film works, more will be made. Producers are scared at the moment."

Filmmaker Onir feels the legalities involved in a biopic on film personalities are also a major hurdle for makers. "Films on sports personalities are inspirational and work in the commercial space. Films on people from showbiz generally turn tragic. Also, there are many permissions needed as there may be sensitive areas in an actor's life, and many people are usually involved," he says.
