Mumbai, Sept. 24 -- Ranveer Singh's jovial demeanour often rubs off on those around him. But there are things that irritate the 29-year-old as well. One such instance that annoyed Ranveer was the recent controversy surrounding his alleged girlfriend, Deepika Padukone. In a freewheeling chat, here, the actor opens up about the issue, and the bond he shares with Deepika, while maintaining, throughout, that he is still "single".
What's your take on the recent controversy surrounding Deepika?
I have zero tolerance for any disrespect towards women. That's just the way I have been raised. I'm very proud of Deepika because she stood up against something that was wrong. And what was heartening to see was the amount of support she got from all corners. I think she spoke from her heart and put out what was in her gut on that [Facebook] post.
Your cameo in Finding Fanny had people in splits... Y
ou know you've done a successful cameo when people love it. When I was down with dengue, I sent Homi (Adajania; director) some selfies of me in a French beard and side parting as look tests. He loved them. I really enjoy doing cameos.
Helps that your alleged girlfriend was also part of the film...
Who's my girlfriend, by the way? You've decided a girlfriend for me? I've always maintained that I'm single.
What's happening between Deepika and you?
We're doing Sanjay Leela Bhansali's next together. It's a huge movie with once-in-a-lifetime characters.
Are you saying you're not in love with Deepika?
I don't have the option [of being in love]. I'm completely devoted to my work. I don't have a personal life. I hardly indulge in recreational activities. I'm happy this way. I'm not complaining.
So then what's the equation you share with her?
Deepika is a very special person in my life. She's somebody who I admire a lot. I admire her talent, and the way she goes about her life as a professional. Having worked with her in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013), I know she's meticulous, organised, a multitasker, and works tirelessly. During Goliyon..., she was also juggling Chennai Express (2013) and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013). I could not have possibly done something like that. I saw her back breaking between shots, a physiotherapist coming and taping her up... that's a lot of hard work. So, I have a great amount of respect and admiration for her. I'm always learning from her. She's somebody I look up to, as a performer and professional.
What's the reason behind your energy?
I've always had it. I think it's the mindset. I feel like I have one life and my time is running out. I want to do everything, and do it well.
Why do you feel that your time is running out?
Next year, I'm going to be 30. My life is not going to go on forever. So, while I'm here, I should make the most of it. That's why I put my soul into everything I do. I want to do as many movies as I can. Who knows what will happen tomorrow? I've already had one very serious experience after I hurt my back during Lootera (2013); and then, when I was down with dengue during Gunday. So, I understand the fragility of life. I lost my best friend recently. We grew up together. I don't know whether there will be a tomorrow and that's what I really believe in. For me, everything is now.
