New Delhi, Jan. 15 -- In Bollywood, news of relationships between actors is common. And so are the hundreds of rumours, sightings and photographs of alleged lovebirds. In spite of that, actors often don't admit to their relationships.
Arguments about the issue, of course, are widely polarised: from 'it's no one else's business' to 'people's curiosity about an actor's life is part of what makes them celebrities'. We look at some recent cases, and get people from the industry talking.
Rumour has it... For a while now, rumour mills have been abuzz about actors Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif 's relationship. The two have never gone public, but with tell-tale pictures of a holiday in Ibiza surfacing, and then Ranbir's cousin Kareena Kapoor Khan referring to Katrina as her "sister-in-law" on a TV chat show, the signs say otherwise.
Likewise, filmmaker Aditya Chopra and actor Rani Mukerji have never admitted to being in a relationship. Rani, however, has been spotted at festivals at the Chopra residence, and, more recently, rumour has it that the two are set to tie the knot.
The latest to join the list are actors Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, along with actors Uday Chopra and Nargis Fakhri. Both the couples have been spotted spending time together in New York and the Maldives respectively.
Actor Vidya Balan and producer Siddharth Roy Kapur too initially denied their bond, but later got married. 'It's their personal life'
Is the point of a denial lost when photographs of these couples keep showing up? Filmmaker Karan Johar, seen as a man always in the know of things, says, "It's their personal life, and it should be kept personal. I respect that. It's the couple's prerogative to admit to their relationship or deny it. Why should they talk just because the media is chasing them? If they get married, they should tell. When you're dating someone, and you don't know if it's going somewhere, why should you talk about it?"
Karan, however, adds that actors need to be very careful, what with "a hundred people staring at them".
Not everyone's hiding
There are Bollywood couples who've never shied away from admitting to their relationships. Kareena and actor Saif Ali Khan were public about their relationship, years before they tied the knot. Actor Abhay Deol and girlfriend Preeti Desai also didn't keep things secret.
Ask Abhay what he feels, and he says, "Everyone has a right to a private life. I, too, wouldn't be open about my relationship until being sure it was a long-term thing. It's not easy being in the public eye, and celebrities often stay mum to protect themselves and their loved ones."
