Mumbai, June 9 -- Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra's father, late Dr Ashok Chopra, who served in the Indian army as a physician and worked closely with the NGO, Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA), will now get a street in Mumbai named after him.
The lane that leads to Priyanka's residence located off Yari Road, Andheri (W) will be called Lieutenant Colonel Dr Ashok Chopra Marg.
Vishwas Shankarwar, assistant municipal commissioner, K-west ward, confirms the news, saying, "Priyanka Chopra's family and her residential society's members approached the local corporator, K-west ward and standing committee chairman, BMC, Yashodhar Phanse. The proposal was then approved by us."
The actor, her family and society members plan to come together on June 10 for the formal ceremony. "Since Priyanka is busy shooting for Zoya Akhtar's next film in Barcelona, she's trying to work her schedule around to return to the city for this one day. She was extremely close to her father, and she is keen on being there for this honour," says a source. Priyanka's mother, Madhu Chopra, expressed her happiness, saying, "It's a matter of pride and honour for us as a family."
While the actor could not be reached, her spokesperson responded, saying, "His (Ashok Chopra) years of service as a doctor have garnered deep admiration and respect. It is a big moment for the family."
