She is Bollywood’s go-to celebrity dancer; her item numbers are so popular that she becomes the talking point of films where she’s appeared for all of 10 minutes.
But Malaika Arora Khan is also married into a famous Khan family, and is mother to an eight-year-old son. Who better to ask then about what it takes to keep a celebrity marriage steady.
You’re an actor, a dancer, wife and mother; what does it take to keep a famous marriage steady?
Everyone wonders what the secret is, but there’s isn’t one. If there was, then all marriages would work. A marriage is something you have to work at every day. If you don’t, there are bound to be issues. A celebrity’s marriage isn’t any different, but a celebrity couple is always in the eye of the public, and there is constant scrutiny. And that can strain a celebrity marriage.
You’re returning as a judge on a talent show. Who would you call the most talented of the young actors in Bollywood?
Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and Aditya Roy Kapur.
And the hottest of that lot?
Aditya. There’s something very cool about him.
Rumours claimed that you had quit doing item songs. Is the one in Happy New Year your last?
That’s not true. Someone is trying to spread rumours. As for Farah’s (director Khan) film, it’s a special appearance, not a dance number.
You had earlier said you want to produce a TV show, and open a restaurant.
The restaurant plan is still a desire, but I have been focusing on my clothing label. Like the other plans, I always wanted to do this too, but things have a way of coming about.
How excited are you about the latest season of India’s Got Talent?
I’m here for the entire season this year, so I’m excited. Last time, I was here just for a part. Being back on TV is great. I’m also excited about the golden buzzer, which gives a contestant the chance to go directly to the semi-finals.
What kind of talent excites you?
I’ll never tire of song-and-dance. Every time a dance comes and is good, I want to join in. Most popular ones (dance shows) have been celebrity-based, while IGT will have the aam junta showing off their talent. They come from remote places and from humble backgrounds. It’s amazing to see their spirit.
With Bollywood actors moving to TV — including Anil Kapoor, with 24 — are you inclined to do fiction shows?
I’ve never thought about it. I was addicted to the international version of the show, and loved the few episodes I saw of the Indian version. I’d love to be part of a show with similar standards. But there isn’t anything in the pipeline.
