Madhur: I sell concepts, not stars..

Madhur Bhandarkar

Mumbai, Sept. 23 -- After making hardhitting films like Chandni Bar (2001), Fashion (2008) and Page 3 (2005), film-maker Madhur Bhandarkar is back with his next project - Calendar Girls. Though his past releases have featured popular actors, this time around, he chose five fresh faces.

"Calendar Girls is unlike Fashion, as is being speculated in the media. Fashion was the story of the rise and fall of a model, whereas this film is about the shelf-life of calendar girls, and what really happens to them once the calendar year is over," says Madhur.

His research led him to startling revelations about the lives of these calendar models. "About 99% of these girls remain unsuccessful, they either change professions, get married or move cities to try their luck elsewhere," he says.

Madhur adds that allegations that the film is based on liquor baron Vijay Mallya's life is only conjecture. "I haven't said that my film is based on a personality. I've never shied away from the fact that there are real-life references, but people shouldn't think that I am making biopics," he says.

While there are no A-listers to back the film, Madhur seems far from worried about being part of the '100-crore club."I belong to a middle-class background and my sensibilities are still the same. It's a small-budget film, shot in 40 days. I am happy with the outcome. I sell concepts, not stars," says Madhur.
