For many years, Kajol was one of the only actresses who didn’t pay attention to her appearance. So, when she recently went in for a makeover, everyone sat up and took notice.
Raj and Simran re-live the romantic times of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge as Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol celebrate 1000 weeks of the movie running at Maratha Mandir, Mumbai.
The actor, however, plays down the transformation, saying, “I’ve not become any style icon; I just decided to have an opinion about how I look.” She adds, “Since I’ve entered the industry, everyone has been telling me what to wear. I had no opinion because I was comfortable in my track pants and jeans.” One day, she finally decided to take charge. “It’s not rocket science. I did some research, hired a stylist and then sat together to decide what I would like to wear and how I would like to look,” explains Kajol.
When the discussion veers towards husband Ajay Devgn — and his recent dance number with Sonakshi Sinha — Kajol laughs. “It’s very difficult to dance with him,” she says, recalling an incident from the sets of Ishq (1997), where choreographer Saroj Khan was teaching the cast some steps.
“Out of all four of us — Aamir (Khan), Juhi (Chawla), Ajay and me, Ajay was the only one who came on time. Saroj ji said, ‘Tum teeno gadhe ho. Kuch nahi aata tum teeno ko, tum apna natak kar rahe ho. Usko dekho, woh beat pe chal raha hai. (You three are donkeys. You know nothing and you do your own mischief. Look at Ajay, he is dancing on the beats)’”
