Despite rave reviews from critics, Imtiaz Ali's Highway made a meagre Rs. 3.42 crore on Friday.
However, the Alia Bhatt, Randeep Hooda-starrer film picked up over the weekend. The movie collected Rs. 4.8 crore on Day Two and the collections further rose on Sunday to Rs. 5.75 crore.
Highway has grossed a total of Rs. 13.75 crore over the first weekend.
Alia Bhatt plays a rich, city girl who gets kidnapped by Randeep Hooda and then finds her inner freedom during her abduction.
Despite a bad show at the ticket windows, the filmmakers seem to have got a pretty decent feedback on the film. Sajid Nadiadwala, who has shared distribution for Highway with UTV Motion Pictures, says, "The film was profitable even before release but the way Highway has been winning hearts since Friday is really very encouraging. Hope the love for the movie keeps pouring in, in the coming days."
Director-writer of the film Imtiaz Ali said, "I have not received such warmth from the theatre audience before. Will always remember this time."
As for the mixed reponse, Imtiaz said, "At least there are opinions. It is actually dangerous when people just say, it's good."
