Govinda: Our equation has been beyond films!

Govinda

By HT

Mumbai, Oct. 10 -- He was one of the biggest stars in the '90s. Yet, Govinda's career went cold post Partner (2007). So did his friendship with co-star Salman Khan. His attempt at a political career also proved unsuccessful.

Yet, on his TV show, once-good-friend Salman said he is still a "fan" of Govinda.

Salman said, "I'm nobody's fan but Govinda's." Your comments?

I sincerely thank him for that. We have been close ever since the late '80s when we met for the first time on an accident site.

So, films were never the main reason to keep you bonded.

Our equation has been beyond films. He is a good human being. I remember I was the one who had sent him (in the '90s) to meet Sajid [Nadiadwala; producer] and had told him, "Salman is a very good person, and you should work with him". I am happy with the way Salman has progressed, and may God bless him.

Wasn't Salman supposed to launch your daughter, Narmada?

Narmada's career has been hit badly with such stupid rumours. Today, kids of David Dhawan, Shatrughan Sinha, Anil Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor are working, only my daughter hasn't got work. I feel completely responsible for it. Either it's just bad luck or people didn't like me, and they (my kids) are bearing the brunt of it.

But had you at any point asked him to launch her?

No. And I strictly request people not to say such things as they hurt Narmada's career. As a father, I feel insulted that she has to go through hard times perhaps because of me.

Why did you decide to make a comeback as a villain?

When Adi (Aditya Chopra; producer) and Shaad (Ali; director) came to me with the role, I was like, "I have to look at my career from a new viewpoint". So I asked my wife (Sunita) and kids, and they said I should go ahead and start working again.
